Linn Cove Viaduct

Monday, August 26 – The last BRP landmark we hit was the Linn Cove Viaduct,  which is a bridge which essentially hangs of the edge of Grandfather Mountain. Completed in 1987,  it wasthe last part of the Blue Ridge Parkway to be built.  And because of Sandy’s love for all things related to infrastructure, we stopped to walk the path that takes you under the viaduct.  My Uncle Bob later told us that Grandfather Mountain is privately owned, it took all those years (the parkway started to be built in the 1930s) to negotiate a way to get the BRP around that mountain in order to make it continuous for it’s entire length.

A few miles later when we sadly had to exit the BRP, we came across this sign for the Eastern Continental Divide, which we didn’t even know existed.  According to Wikipedia, the Eastern Continental Divide demarcates two watersheds of the Atlantic Ocean: the Gulf of Mexico Watershed (where all water flows toward the Gulf) and the Atlantic Seaboard watershed.   Another geography lesson!
