Around Roanoke

Sunday, August 25 - Since we found so many things we wanted to see while in Roanoke, we did a few quick things before heading back to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

First, a few quick pictures of the Hotel Roanoke, which first opened in the 1880s, and then had a major renovation and addition in 1937, adding the grand Tudor entrance and lobby.   The hotel was built by the railroad, and is still a major nucleus for downtown Roanoke.

Right next door in the former Norfolk & Western Railroad Train station built in 1947, there is a photography exhibit of O. Winston Link, who took amazing photographs of the railroad and its employees, primarily in the 1950s.  We could have stayed there for hours.  We even got to see a train pass by.  (Sandy was pretty excited about that.)

Finally, on the way out of town we drove up Mill Mountain to see the Roanoke Star, and sweeping views of the city and valley.  (That's the star on the top of the hill as seen from the hotel.)  All in all, a fantastic stop!
