Around Charlottesville and UVA

Saturday, August 24 – Before heading out of town toward the Blue Ridge Parkway, we had to make sure to see a bit more of the town.  Coincidentally, we arrived in Charlottesville the same day as ALL of the college students and their parents.  Today is Move In Day.  So, traffic was pretty crazy all around town.  Even when we were at Monticello, the tour guide asked, “Who’s here to drop a kid today?”

We loved that all around town, the streets were painted with the UVA “V”.  (We need to look into seeing if they can do that in Oxford, OH for Miami U move-in day!)

We of course needed to see Thomas Jefferson’s famous Rotunda and Academical Village in the center of UVA’s campus.  It’s really a beautiful campus, and reminds us a lot of Miami U’s campus…  Thomas Jefferson must have modeled UVA after Miami, since UVA was founded in 1819, and Miami of course was founded in 1809...

Only the top students are invited to live on the Academical Quad.  And since it was move-in day, we got a little peek inside a room.  Pretty modest size, but in a beautiful setting on the green below the Rotunda.  The doors to the room are on the outdoor walkway, and one of the parents told Sandy that you have to walk across the quad to use the bathroom.  We weren't too sure of what to think about that, especially after staying at the dorms at Miami Alumni Weekend earlier in the summer, when I had to use a bathroom a different floor.  I guess one of the perks of being a college grad (instead of a student), is that you can have your own en suite bath!

And finally, the obligatory tourist shot with our new friend TJ (Sandy made me do it):

  1. Looks like great weather for siteseeing. UVA is a beautiful campus, though I don't know how I'd feel about going to a school with such a plantation vibe.
